The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is facing internal conflict after senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia and others opposed the removal of Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
On Saturday, Majithia, along with leaders Sharanjit Singh Dhillon and Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal, issued a joint statement criticising the SGPC’s decision. They argued that removing the Jathedar in this manner has hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community and called for restoring the dignity of the Akal Takht.
The statement, signed by Majithia, Dhillon, Lodhinangal, Jodh Singh Samra, Sarabjot Singh Sabi, Ramandeep Singh Sandhu, and Simranjit Singh Dhillon, suggested that the SGPC's move was influenced by a faction within SAD, allegedly led by Sukhbir Singh Badal. Rebel leaders have accused the SGPC of acting under political pressure.
The statement also expressed concerns that recent developments have weakened SAD and strengthened anti-Panthic forces, calling for reflection within the party.
SAD strongly reacted to Majithia’s stance. In a statement issued on behalf of working president Balwinder Singh Bhundar, the party accused Majithia of betraying the party.
