Rio in Delhi: Naga peace and Assam border row in spotlight

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his Cabinet meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to deliberate on Naga political issues, border disputes, and development initiatives for the state.


Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, accompanied by members of his Cabinet, met Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah in the national capital on Thursday.

 

The discussions centred on several critical matters impacting the state, including the protracted Naga political issue, demands for greater autonomy in Eastern Nagaland, the long-standing Nagaland-Assam border dispute, and the need for central assistance in various development projects.

 

Naga political issue:


Chief Minister Rio stressed the urgency of resolving the Naga political issue, urging the Union Government to sustain its efforts to achieve a lasting peace. He highlighted the significance of addressing the concerns of all stakeholders to arrive at an inclusive solution.

 

"The peace process remains pivotal, and we remain optimistic about finding an agreement that respects the aspirations of the Naga people," he said.

 

Eastern Nagaland political issue:


Rio also raised the Eastern Nagaland political issue, where demands for enhanced autonomy and accelerated development have gained traction.

 

The Chief Minister cited the importance of addressing these demands in order to balance regional aspirations with broader state interests.

 

Nagaland-Assam border dispute:


The Chief Minister discussed the contentious Nagaland-Assam border dispute, which has periodically triggered tensions between the two neighbouring states.

 

Rio called for a peaceful resolution to the territorial claims and border skirmishes, emphasising the need for better cooperation to maintain stability.

 

Development projects:


Beyond political matters, Rio sought central support for key developmental initiatives in Nagaland, including projects aimed at improving infrastructure and connectivity.

 

He stressed the importance of boosting resources in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and employment to catalyse economic progress in the state.
