Paddy fields submerged in a low-lying area in Sultanpur Lodhi.

Incessant rainfall over the past 24 hours has worsened the situation in the low-lying areas of Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district. With the Beas river in spate, the rising water level has caused damage to standing paddy crop sown over more than 50,000 acres in the district.

The district administration and followers of Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal distributed relief material among the flood victims. Seechewal, along with his followers, distributed cooked food, tarpaulins, medicines and grocery items in the worst-affected villages in the Mand areas. Seechewal raised the issue of desilting sand from the bed of Harike Pattan to facilitate better discharge of river water and control floods.
