A tragic road accident in Murshidabad’s Kandi area claimed at least five lives and left ten others injured on Sunday morning, plunging the local residents into grief. The incident occurred around 11 AM near the Gokarna Power House intersection on the Kandi-Behrampur state highway. According to police sources, a group of 20 pilgrims from the Rukunpur area were returning home after bathing in the Bele area of Birbhum district. They were traveling in a tractor when the vehicle collided head-on with a dumper coming from the opposite direction.

The impact of the collision caused the tractor to overturn. Five people, including three women, died on the spot. At least ten others sustained injuries — some critically — and were rushed to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. Hospital sources fear the death toll may rise.

The accident sparked panic among locals and led to a temporary traffic jam on the busy highway. Personnel from Kandi police station arrived promptly to restore order and clear the road.

News of the accident spread rapidly, drawing relatives to the hospital. A pall of sorrow descended on Rukunpur as families awaited updates on their loved ones.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest reckless driving may have led to the crash.

This devastating accident has once again highlighted safety concerns on state highways, especially during festive and holiday seasons when such vehicles are often overloaded and ill-equipped for long-distance travel.
