Manali’s famous Rohtang Pass will stay open for vehicles until December 10. This decision came after a thorough inspection of the Manali-Rohtang route by Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S Raveesh and Manali SDM Raman Sharma. Officials said it was decided after considering current weather and road conditions at the high-altitude pass.
According to the latest order, vehicles can travel up to the Pass only between 9 am and 3 pm, and only if weather conditions allow. Vehicles can go uphill after 9 am but must return before 3 pm the same day. Authorities have emphasised that the window is very sensitive to sudden changes like reduced visibility, snowfall, or icy roads, any of which can lead to an immediate shutdown for safety reasons.
Tourists and local businesses have welcomed the extension. At 13,052 feet, Rohtang Pass is one of Himachal Pradesh’s most popular tourist spots, known for its snowy fields, stunning mountain views, and as a gateway to adventures in the Pir Panjal range. Even a short extension of access into December helps the local economy, supporting hotels, guides, taxi drivers, and snow sport providers.
Last year, the pass remained open for vehicles until November 26 because of an unusually dry season that allowed the season to last longer than usual. While officials normally close the pass around mid-November, they adjust based on the actual weather conditions.
The pass usually reopens in late May or early June after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) clears the snow. This year, reopening was slightly delayed because winter lasted longer. Tourist vehicles were allowed from mid-to-late May, following the National Green Tribunal’s strict permit rules. The NGT limits traffic to 1,200 vehicles daily, 800 petrol and 400 diesel, with permits available online.
Officials emphasised that safety and protecting the environment remain the top priorities. Any decision to keep the pass open past December 10 will depend entirely on weather changes and on-site assessments.
