In a significant boost to tourism in Himachal Pradesh, the iconic Rohtang Pass officially reopened for visitors on Saturday, marking the start of the high-altitude travel season.
Travelers can once again witness snow in peak summer, as vehicles made their way through towering snow walls nearly 40 feet high, offering a spectacular view.
Despite the harsh weather and heavy snowfall, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) successfully cleared the snow-covered route, ensuring safe passage for travelers. The reopening has sparked a surge in tourist activity, with over 800 vehicles heading to Rohtang on the very first day.
S. Ravish, in his Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul capacity as District Magistrate, issued a formal notification announcing the reopening of the pass. Ahead of the opening, Manali SDM Raman Kumar Sharma conducted an inspection on May 15 along with The district administration has also announced that the Rohtang Pass will remain closed every Tuesday to facilitate routine maintenance work. Notably, the BRO managed to clear the route 13 days earlier than last year, when the pass reopened on May 30.and police officials to ensure road conditions and tourist facilities were in place.
Parking areas were cleared and essential amenities such as toilets were arranged before the reopening to accommodate the expected tourist footfall.
The district administration has also announced that the Rohtang Pass will remain closed every Tuesday to facilitate routine maintenance work. Notably, the BRO managed to clear the route 13 days earlier than last year, when the pass reopened on May 30.
Enthusiasm among tourists is running high, with a sharp spike in online permit bookings for vehicle entry to Rohtang. As per National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines, 800 vehicle permits are issued daily—400 each for petrol and diesel vehicles. More than half the permits for Sunday were already booked in advance, indicating a heavy influx of tourists into Manali.
Located at an altitude of 13,050 feet, Rohtang Pass continues to be a favorite destination for travelers seeking snow, adventure, and panoramic mountain vistas even during the summer season.
