Guwahati is all set to host the 8th edition of the Rongali festival from June 21 to 23, a celebration that promises to showcase Assam’s vibrant culture through a rich tapestry of traditions, music, and culinary delights.
Rongali serves as a vibrant platform for various tribes including Bodo, Mishing, Karbi, and Dimasa, offering a glimpse into their unique lifestyles, dance forms, and traditional sports.
Recognised as one of India's largest musical festivals, it will feature performances by top musicians alongside local talents, highlighting Assam's musical prowess.
Launched in 2015, Rongali has evolved into Assam's premier organised festival, fostering tourism, business opportunities, and cultural harmony.
Supported by the directorate of cultural affairs, Govt. of Assam, the event will gather around 700 folk artistes from seven states, underscoring its role in promoting regional cultural diversity.
B Kalyan Chakraborty, principal secretary of cultural affairs, called Rongali's significance as a cultural movement nurturing local talents and attracting international visitors keen on experiencing Assam’s cultural heritage.
The festival, open daily from 4 pm with free entry for all, aims to blend creativity with entrepreneurship. Shyamkanu Mahanta, chief organizer, highlighted the 'vocal for local' exhibition showcasing Assam’s silk, crafts, tea, and agricultural products.
The 'Rongali entrepreneurship award' will recognise 10 outstanding entrepreneurs contributing to the state's economic landscape.
Beyond cultural displays, the festival will spotlight northeastern culinary traditions, tourist destinations, and historical figures from various tribes and communities.
Renowned artists like Zubeen Garg, Priyanka Bharali, and emerging singers will grace the event, underscoring its community-building ethos.
Renowned singer, Zubeen Garg, brand ambassador of the festival said, “It is a community movement that unites various communities, promoting cultural and economic development in Assam.”
The festival will also feature performances of Jyoti Sangeet, Rabha Sangeet, and a showcase of hip hop culture with 150 artists.
A convergence of fashion and culture, Rongali will present handloom designs by 16 local designers, adding another layer to its celebration of Assam’s artistic wealth and diversity.
