A part of the roof of Terminal-1 at Delhi Airport collapsed onto cars, including taxis, causing one fatality and five injuries amid heavy rain early Friday, according to Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials.
Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials conducted a search operation to ensure that no one was trapped in the damaged vehicles.
Usha Rangnani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI), stated that traffic heading to T-1 departure of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has been redirected at the CISF check post toward T-1 arrival.
After the DFS received a call about the incident at around 5:30 a.m., three fire tenders were dispatched to the airport.
According to officials, in addition to the roof sheet, the support beams collapsed, damaging the cars parked in the terminal's pick-up and drop-off area.
The injured individuals were taken to Medanta Hospital near the airport.
Unfortunately, one of the injured individuals didn't survive the treatment, as per the officials.
According to the officials, one of the six injured was rescued from a car on which an iron beam had fallen.
Flight departures have been temporarily suspended at the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 following the roof collapse incident.
"Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed around 5 am. There are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected," a DIAL spokesperson said in a statement.
As a result of this incident, the spokesperson said all departures from Terminal-1 are temporarily suspended, and check-in counters are closed as a safety measure.
Flight arrivals have not been impacted.
