TMC MLA Narayan Goswami has found himself at the centre of a political storm after a video allegedly showing him blowing a flying kiss to a woman during a public procession went viral, triggering sharp reactions from opposition parties.

The controversy erupted following a rally organised in Ashoknagar, North 24 Parganas, to celebrate the success of the state government’s Lakshmir Bhandar welfare scheme, a monthly bank transfer facility for women electorates. The procession, which began in the Sherpur area, passed through key localities before culminating near Maniktala, drawing large participation from women beneficiaries.

Goswami, who represents the Ashoknagar Assembly constituency and also serves as the Zilla Parishad President, joined the procession alongside party workers and supporters. However, at the end of the rally, a moment in which the MLA allegedly blew a ‘flying kiss’ toward a female party worker—apparently in a light-hearted exchange— was captured on camera. The footage quickly spread across social media platforms, igniting widespread debate and criticism.

Opposition leaders wasted no time in condemning the gesture, describing it as unbecoming of a public representative. Left leader Akash Kar took a pointed swipe at the MLA, alleging a pattern of controversial conduct.

“The MLA has previously made objectionable remarks about women. Such incidents reveal the character of those elected to public office. The people of Ashoknagar will respond appropriately,” Kar said.

Leaders of the BJP also criticised the incident, calling it damaging to the dignity and image of the constituency. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari condemned the episode on social media, terming it unacceptable conduct for an elected official.

The ruling TMC has so far not issued any official statement regarding the incident. Goswami himself has also remained silent amid mounting criticism.

The controversy has revived memories of Goswami’s earlier run-ins with public outrage over alleged derogatory remarks directed at women—incidents that had drawn rebuke even from TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

With Assembly elections on the horizon, the episode has injected fresh volatility into Ashoknagar’s political climate. As the video continues to circulate and reactions intensify, the “flying kiss” controversy has become the latest flashpoint in West Bengal’s ever-combustible political theatre.
