In a significant enforcement action, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Eastern Railway zone apprehended over 1,400 male passengers in October for travelling in train compartments designated exclusively for women.
An official from the RPF urged male passengers to refrain from using ladies' compartments or ladies' special trains, emphasising that women experiencing any inconvenience can reach out for assistance by dialling 139 to contact railway authorities.
The RPF recorded more than 1,200 cases related to this violation, leading to the arrest of 1,408 male passengers across the Eastern Railway zone.
Of these, 262 arrests occurred in the Howrah division, 574 in Sealdah, 176 in Malda, and 392 in Asansol, the official stated.
To deter this practice, penal measures, including fines and potential imprisonment, will be initiated against offenders found using compartments designated for women only.
