The Indian National Congress has issued show-cause notices to four MLAs who allegedly cross-voted during the Rajya Sabha elections. They are accused of voting in favour of a BJP-backed Independent candidate Satish Nandal. Despite this, the Congress candidate Karamvir Singh Boudh managed to win by a narrow margin.
The MLAs named in the notices are Shalley Chaudhary, Renu Bala, Mohd Ilyas, and Mohd Israil. The notices, issued by the party’s disciplinary panel, state that the leadership has been informed that during the Rajya Sabha election on March 16, the MLAs allegedly voted against the party’s official direction. This, the notice said, led to their votes being cancelled or declared invalid.
The notice further said that if proven, this act appears to be a deliberate move that goes against the party’s official stand. It added that such behaviour amounts to a serious breach of party discipline.
It also stated that such actions are considered anti-party activities and weaken the party’s unity, integrity, and ideological commitments. The notice added that this is a clear violation of the party’s Constitution, rules, and established norms.
The MLAs have been asked to reply within seven days of receiving the notice. They have been told to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against them for the alleged misconduct.
The notice also warned that if no response is received within the given time, it will be assumed that they have no explanation to give. In that case, the party will proceed ex parte as per its rules and legal provisions.
Chairman of the disciplinary committee Dharampal Malik confirmed that the notices have been issued.
