The Alaknanda River has risen above the warning level at Rudraprayag, prompting the district administration to step up monitoring. People living in low-lying areas and along the riverbanks have been advised to move to safer places and remain alert.
Officials of the Rudraprayag Municipal Council said continuous rainfall has increased the water levels of rivers, streams and drains across the region. Repeated announcements are being made in the town, urging residents in vulnerable locations to take precautions and avoid risky areas.
Municipal Council chairperson Santosh Rawat said heavy rain has caused water levels to rise steadily throughout the district. He said residents from sensitive areas are being asked to shift to safer locations, while those living close to the river have been advised to temporarily vacate their homes.
According to Rawat, municipal teams are actively carrying out public awareness announcements and are being dispatched wherever assistance or emergency support is required.
The swollen river has also disrupted access to several houses situated near the riverbank. The Rudraprayag Sangam and nearby ghats are now under water due to the sharp rise in the river level.
Authorities said they are keeping a close watch on the situation as water levels remain high. Residents have once again been urged to follow official advisories and avoid venturing into vulnerable areas.
Earlier on Thursday, the Kedarnath Yatra was halted after a rain-triggered landslide blocked the trekking route near Gaurikund. Movement on the Kedarnath Highway near Munkatiya was also affected after debris and boulders fell onto the road.
The landslide took place about 200 metres ahead of the Gaurikund Gate, dumping a large quantity of rocks and debris onto the trekking track and cutting off access to the pilgrimage route.
As a precaution, authorities suspended the yatra and moved stranded pilgrims to safe locations. Personnel from the police, district administration, SDRF and other agencies reached the affected site to assess the situation and begin restoration and clearance work.
