Overflowing Alaknanda river near Rudraprayag

Continuous rainfall in Uttarakhand has caused the water levels of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers in Rudraprayag district to rise above their warning marks. In response, the district administration has issued an alert and is closely monitoring the situation.

Officials have advised local residents and Char Dham pilgrims to avoid riverbanks and stay cautious. The warning comes as persistent rain continues to affect several parts of the pilgrimage route.

Recent measurements showed the Alaknanda River flowing at 626.80 metres, slightly above its warning level and close to the danger mark. The Mandakini River also crossed its warning threshold, though it remained below the danger level.

Authorities said there is no immediate concern at other monitoring locations. Water levels recorded at Ganganagar and Gaurikund were still within safe limits and below the warning marks.

To spread awareness, the administration has been making public announcements in sensitive areas through loudspeakers. People have been asked to stay away from rivers, streams and low-lying zones where water levels can rise suddenly during heavy rain.

Residents have also been urged to immediately inform the District Emergency Operations Centre about any landslide, road blockage or other emergency so that rescue and response teams can act without delay.

The latest alert follows weather-related disruptions reported in the district a day earlier. Overflowing streams, minor landslides and rising river levels affected movement in some stretches of the Char Dham route.

Officials have already advised pilgrims to check weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling. Disaster management teams and emergency personnel remain on standby to respond to any situation.

All departments concerned have been directed to stay prepared and maintain readiness, especially in areas located near the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers.

With monsoon activity continuing across the state, authorities have appealed to residents, tourists and pilgrims to follow safety advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and cooperate with local officials until conditions improve.
