Kolkata Police on Thursday detained BJP leader Rupa Ganguly for allegedly obstructing police work during a demonstration outside Bansdroni police station.
Ganguly, a former Rajya Sabha MP and well-known actor, was demanding the release of five individuals arrested for reportedly manhandling police officers.
The incident followed protests by locals in the Bansdroni area after a Class 9 student tragically died under the wheels of a payloader on Wednesday.
Angry residents had gheraoed police officers in response to the incident, leading to the arrests.
Speaking to media persons, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma confirmed Ganguly’s detention, stating, “She was demanding the release of five persons arrested for manhandling the police yesterday.”
Verma, who was assessing Durga Puja security arrangements, added that Ganguly had been informed that the arrests were made based on specific charges and that legal remedies could be sought through the courts.
