The Alumni Association of SCD Government College celebrated the 105th birth anniversary of its noted alumnus, renowned poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, at the college.
Retired IAS officer Shivdular Singh Dhillon, also an alumnus of the college and currently Secretary-cum-Chief Executive of the Indian Red Cross Society Punjab, presided over the event.
A large number of alumni and teachers attended the programme. The event featured renditions of Sahir Ludhianvi’s popular songs by alumni members, accompanied by the Afreen Musical Group. A discussion on the poet’s progressive literary legacy was also held.
Speakers who reflected on Sahir’s poetry included Ravinder Vatsyan, Prof P K Sharma, Prof P D Gupta, Manjit Singh Badhan, O P Verma, Brij Goyal and Dr Avinash Sharma from Canada. Poems dedicated to International Women’s Day were also recited.
The programme was compered jointly by Brij Bhushan Goyal and O P Verma, drawing appreciation from the audience. On the occasion, Shivdular Singh Dhillon announced the donation of two computers and software for visually impaired and differently-abled students of the college.
Prof Ashok Kapoor and Prof P K Sharma also donated books worth Rs 15,000 related to competitive examinations for the college library. Brij Goyal informed that alumni members and admirers from the city have proposed forming a Sahir Ludhianvi Literary Forum to keep the poet’s legacy alive.
