The Mumbai Police have revealed that both security guards at Saif Ali Khan’s residence were asleep when the attacker entered the building by scaling its compound wall on January 16.
The intruder, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad alias Vijay Das (30), bypassed the security by entering the building through the main entrance, where no CCTV cameras were installed, a police official said.
“When the security guards were asleep, Shehzad crossed the boundary wall. He removed his shoes and placed them in his bag to avoid noise, and also switched off his phone,” the official said.
The police reconstructed the crime scene at the actor’s 12-storey residence in Bandra on Tuesday.
For over an hour, investigators, along with the accused, examined how Shehzad carried out the crime with the intent to commit theft.
During the investigation, it was revealed that there were no CCTV cameras installed in the building’s corridor.
One security guard was asleep in the cabin, while the other was near the gate, according to the police.
Shehzad entered Saif Ali Khan’s house on the evening of January 16 with the intent of theft.
However, the situation escalated when he was spotted by a house help in Saif’s younger son Jeh’s room.
The staff raised an alarm, leading Saif to confront the intruder. During the altercation, the actor sustained multiple stab wounds, including a serious injury near his spine.
Saif was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors performed urgent surgery to remove a knife lodged in his back and to prevent spinal fluid leakage. He was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, five days after the incident.
Meanwhile, police revealed that Shehzad, who was arrested from Thane on January 19, had entered the country illegally seven months ago. He used a West Bengal resident’s Aadhaar card to obtain a SIM card before moving to Mumbai.
