Samosa controversy takes political overtones in HP

Officials in denial mode, BJP says the government has no interest in probing alleged acts of corruption in different departments and is only bothered about finding out who ate samosas meant for CM.

A case of 'Samosas' being eaten by the CM's security staff has led to a political slugfest in Himachal Pradesh.

The samosa controversy in Himachal Pradesh has come in handy for the opposition BJP, after the CID wing reportedly ordered an inquiry into the episode of samosas and cakes ordered from a premier private hotel in Shimla being mistakenly served to Chief Minister’s security staff instead of the CM and the inquiry report got leaked out into the media.

The so-called ‘goof up’ occurred after a function attended by the CM at CID headquarters here last month and it was reportedly termed as an anti-government act by the inside officials.

The inquiry report submitted to the Director General of Police, CID, by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, CID, has been doing rounds on social media. It explains the sequence as to how the three boxes of refreshment meant the VIP was served to someone else, yet the CID officials are in denial mode.

“The Chief Minister was our Chief Guest for the inauguration of the data centre of Cybercrime. It was a smooth function. When we were all sitting over tea in the office, someone pointed out that refreshments were ordered for the occasion. We just asked to find out where that refreshment was. No notice was served, no inquiry was ordered and no explanation was sought,” said Sanjeev Ranjan Ojha, Director General of Police, Crime Investigation Department, Himachal Pradesh.

He said the matter was being politicized. “It is an internal matter of the CID.  I urge the media not to make an issue out of it,” Ojha said. Ojha said he had only asked to find out verbally. “However the report came in writing and it got leaked. We will look into it,” he said.

Principal Media Advisor to the CM, Naresh Chauhan said, “The government has nothing to do with it. The matter pertains to CID. The CM avoids eating anything from outside because of his health issues,” he said. He said a non-issue was being given a political colour unnecessarily.

However, the BJP leaders have jumped to cash in on the controversy. “Surprisingly, the government has not ordered a probe into the alleged acts of corruption unfolded in different departments, but is quick to probe what happened to samosas in a CID function. Why they were served to others, though they were meant for CM? Every officer is so serious about it from top to bottom.

So much so that the CID wing ordered an inquiry into it and has termed it an anti-government act. This shows the priorities of the government, which has turned out to be a flop on every front,” said Leader of Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur.

Thakur said the Congress government‘s way of making decisions has become a talking point at the national level. “The government is taking decisions without thinking in depth and then withdrawing them when it invites mockery at all levels,” he said. Thakur said the government’s decisions like toilet tax, notification of abolishing posts, and lying vacant for two years, all indicate the government’s immaturity.

“It’s ridiculous that from top to bottom, they are worried about samosas. None is bothered that a female Superintendent of Police in Himachal was made to pack up her bags overnight to proceed on long leave, without assigning reasons. What kind of government is it?” the former BJP CM said.
