Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the renovation of the Main Primary Health Centre (PHC) building and associated facilities at Mangsang in East Garo Hills district.
The project includes the renovation of the PHC building, staff quarters, additional General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) quarters and the construction of a yoga-cum-meeting hall.
The health centre has been serving residents in the area for more than three decades, and the renovation aims to upgrade infrastructure to meet the growing healthcare needs of the local population.
Improved residential facilities for medical staff are expected to help retain doctors and nurses in the area, ensuring consistent medical services for residents in nearby villages.

The chief minister said strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure would reduce the burden on higher medical institutions and improve accessibility to affordable healthcare in rural areas.
On the same occasion, Sangma also laid the foundation stone for the construction of a mini stadium at Mangsang, which will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 4.73 crore.
The existing ground at Mangsang has long served as a hub for football players, sports enthusiasts and residents from surrounding villages. The new project will replace the old and dilapidated gallery with modern infrastructure.
Once completed, the mini stadium is expected to provide improved facilities for sports events, local tournaments and community gatherings in the district.
The initiatives form part of the state government’s broader push to strengthen healthcare services and promote sports infrastructure in rural areas of Meghalaya.
