In a major step towards making the city slum-free, the UT Administration demolished Sanjay Colony in Industrial Area, Phase-I, today. As many as 1,000 jhuggis had been removed, reclaiming about 6 acres of government land that was illegally encroached upon by slum dwellers.
A camp was held earlier this week to allow residents of the slum area a final chance to submit their documents, but only 20 individuals submitted the papers, none meeting the eligibility criteria for rehabilitation under the Centre’s Affordable Rental Housing scheme.
Most of the occupants of the colony started removing their belongings before the demolition drive was launched. Following the demolition of Sanjay Colony, the administration will now focus on Janta Colony in Sector 25, the largest slum area in Chandigarh, covering over 10 acres of government land with around 2,500 shanties. Janta Colony, home to an estimated 10,000 people, stands on government land valued at approximately Rs 350 crore, which has been earmarked for a dispensary, primary school, community center, and shopping area.
This demolition follows a previous drive in May 2022, when Colony No. 4 was razed, reclaiming 65 acres of land valued at nearly Rs 2,000 crore.
