Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday praised West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose for his steadfast commitment to upholding the principles of the Constitution in what he described as "very adversarial circumstances."
Sarma, who met with the Governor in Guwahati, expressed his admiration for Bose’s actions during their conversation. He later shared a brief video of the meeting on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he pointed the significance of Bose's role in defending constitutional values.
"In my courtesy meeting with the Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal Dr C V Ananda Bose Ji in Guwahati, I conveyed our immense appreciation for his sagacity in defending the Constitution even in very adversarial circumstances," Sarma wrote.
The video posted by Sarma depicted a cordial exchange between the two leaders, with them sharing scarves and books before engaging in a discussion.
According to sources, their conversation centred around the ongoing turmoil in Bengal, particularly in the wake of the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
During the meeting, doctors from Assam also met with Governor Bose to express their concerns regarding the safety of medical professionals. They submitted a memorandum demanding justice for the deceased doctor and urging stronger protections for healthcare workers in Bengal.
The West Bengal Governor assured the visiting doctors of his commitment to addressing their concerns, including taking legal actions to ensure the protection of those working in the health sector. Bose also assured them that their demands would be communicated to the Prime Minister, as well as the Home and Health Ministers.
The official X account of the West Bengal Governor shared images of the meeting, highlighting the solidarity expressed by Assam’s medical community in response to the tragic incident in Kolkata.
The discussions between Bose and Sarma also touched on broader developments in the region, including the situation in Bangladesh, according to sources.
