Newly appointed president of the BJP Jammu and Kashmir unit, Sat Sharma.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced on Sunday the appointment of Sat Sharma as the new president of its Jammu and Kashmir unit, following the recent assembly elections in the region.

Sharma succeeds Ravinder Raina, who lost his Nowshera seat in the assembly polls.

Raina has been at the helm of the Jammu and Kashmir unit since 2018 and will now serve on the BJP’s national executive committee.

The announcement was made through an official notice issued by Arun Singh, the BJP’s national general secretary, who stated that these appointments were made by party president J.P. Nadda.

Prior to this role, Sat Sharma served as the working president of the Jammu and Kashmir unit, having been appointed to that position in September this year.

The BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit will convene in Srinagar today to elect its legislative party leader ahead of the first assembly session in the Union Territory, which is scheduled for November 4 after a gap of six years.

The BJP emerged as the second-largest party in the recently concluded Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, following the National Conference.

The meeting is expected to be attended by all 28 MLAs and senior party leaders. During this meeting, the leader of the opposition will also be elected, with the name forwarded to the party's central leadership.

Sources within the party indicate that five names are currently under consideration for the opposition leader position, with Sunil Sharma and Dr. Devender Manyal emerging as frontrunners.

Concurrently, the ruling National Conference will hold a significant meeting today, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to decide on the speaker for the J&K assembly.

Reports suggest that senior NC leader and former finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather is likely to be appointed as the new Speaker.
