Savarkar saga: Maharashtra minister challenges Thackeray-Gandhi alliance

As the political landscape in Maharashtra braces for the conclusion of Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra in Mumbai, the looming question of whether Uddhav Thackeray, the Shiv Sena chief and a key figure in the opposition INDIA bloc, will share a stage with the Congress leader has sparked controversy.

This controversy stems from Rahul Gandhi's past criticisms of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a prominent figure in Maharashtra's history and a revered icon for many.

State minister Shambhuraj Desai has been vocal about his concerns regarding potential disrespect towards Savarkar during the upcoming event, scheduled to take place on March 17.

Desai emphasized that in Maharashtra, there is zero tolerance for those who denigrate Savarkar, highlighting the significance of upholding his legacy. This sentiment has led Desai to question whether Thackeray, representing the Shiv Sena, would align himself with Rahul Gandhi on the stage, particularly considering Gandhi's previous remarks about Savarkar.

During one of his previous visits to Maharashtra as part of his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi had criticized Savarkar, drawing a swift response from Uddhav Thackeray.

Thackeray had cautioned Gandhi against disparaging Savarkar, whom he holds in high regard, warning that such actions could strain the unity of the opposition alliance.

Beyond the issue of Savarkar, Desai has also urged Thackeray to clarify his stance on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which recently came into effect. Desai stressed the importance of Thackeray expressing a clear position on the CAA, indicating whether he supports or opposes it.

This call for clarity underscores the need for transparency and consistency in political positions, especially on matters of national significance.

The political dynamics in Maharashtra are further complicated by the intricate web of alliances. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, comprising the Congress, Shiv Sena, and NCP, holds sway in the state.

Additionally, smaller parties like the Swambhimani Vikash Parishad (SWP) and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) are expected to join forces with the Congress-led alliance. With Maharashtra sending 48 legislators to the Lok Sabha, the impending Lok Sabha polls, likely to be held in April-May, carry immense political weight and could potentially reshape the state's political landscape.

In summary, the looming question of Thackeray's alignment with Rahul Gandhi, coupled with the need for clarity on the CAA, underscores the complexity of Maharashtra's political milieu and the high stakes involved in the upcoming elections.
