After its recent win in the JSW Energy case, the Himachal Pradesh government is now focusing on recovering power dues pending for the past 14 years from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
The case will be heard by the Supreme Court on Tuesday by a bench of Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Vijay Bishnoi.
A government spokesperson said under Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s leadership, the state is actively working to recover its rightful power dues from BBMB projects. Himachal has claimed 7.19 per cent share in electricity from all BBMB projects since November 1966 or from the commissioning dates of the respective projects.
The spokesperson pointed out that the Supreme Court had already ruled in Himachal’s favour on September 27, 2011. Following this, the Union Ministry of Power had instructed BBMB to begin supplying 7.19 per cent of power to Himachal from November 1, 2011.
A detailed report submitted later confirmed that Himachal is owed 13,066 million units of power , to be recovered from Punjab and Haryana in a 60:40 ratio.
However, despite the court’s order, the Attorney General and the Ministry of Power have not yet provided a clear way to make the power payment, which led to repeated delays due to technical and procedural issues.
The spokesperson said the state government is fully committed to fighting for its rights in the Supreme Court and will take all necessary legal steps to recover the long-pending dues from BBMB.
