Schools and colleges in Manipur’s Imphal Valley and Jiribam districts are set to reopen from Friday, marking an end to a 13-day shutdown prompted by heightened violence.

The Directorate of Education issued a directive on Thursday confirming the resumption of normal classes for all institutions, including government, government-aided, private, and centrally-run schools, starting November 29.

Similarly, the Higher and Technical Education Department has announced the reopening of state universities, government colleges, and government-aided colleges from the same day.

The closure of educational institutions was enforced on 16 November after the grim discovery of six bodies—three women and three children—who had been missing since a violent confrontation on 11 November.

The remains were found in the Jiri and Barak rivers, stretching across Manipur and Assam.

The violence was linked to escalating clashes between the Meitei community and suspected Kuki-Zo militants. The missing individuals, all Meiteis, reportedly disappeared from a relief camp in Jiribam following a gunfight between security forces and militants that left 10 insurgents dead.

A government source stated, "Prohibitory orders have been in place till Thursday in the Imphal Valley districts and Jiribam."

However, uncertainty looms over whether the curfew will be lifted as no fresh notification has yet been issued.

Manipur has been engulfed in ethnic strife since May last year, pitting the valley-based Meitei community against Kuki-Zo groups in the hills.

The unrest has claimed over 250 lives and displaced thousands, creating a prolonged humanitarian crisis in the region.

Authorities are reportedly monitoring the situation closely, but residents remain wary as tensions persist.
