Following a warning of heavy rainfall from the Meteorological Department, the Dehradun administration has announced a holiday for all schools and Anganwadi centres on Wednesday.
The closure applies to both government and private schools from Classes 1 to 12, along with all Anganwadi centres across the district.
Amid the worsening weather conditions, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed the Disaster Management Department to stay on high alert. He also asked the SDRF, NDRF and district administrations to remain prepared for any emergency and ensure swift rescue and relief operations if required.
The Chief Minister appealed to residents and tourists to remain cautious. He advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and step out only when absolutely necessary.
The state government has also urged the public to stay away from rivers, streams and other vulnerable locations. People have been asked to follow all safety advisories issued by local authorities.
Continuous rainfall since Tuesday night has led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Tamsa River, which flows near the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts, including Dehradun, Bageshwar, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi. The alert warns of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in these areas.
Earlier this week, Chief Minister Dhami took note of the damage caused by a landslide on the road connecting Khainuri village in Chamoli district's Dasholi block. He instructed the district administration and concerned departments to restore the road on priority and ensure traffic movement resumes at the earliest.
During a phone conversation with villagers, residents informed the Chief Minister that the road had been severely damaged by a landslide, affecting daily travel for nearly 120 families.
After hearing their concerns, Dhami directed officials to begin restoration work without delay. He also asked them to assess the situation on the ground and take all necessary steps to restore safe connectivity to the village.
