Assam's Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, following a recent cabinet meeting, announced a unique incentive to promote academic excellence among students. Under this initiative, both boys and girls scoring 75% or above in the Higher Secondary (HS) exams will receive scooters.
The decision aims to motivate students to excel in their examinations and is expected to benefit approximately 22,000 students achieving the required percentage in the HS exams.
"The scheme is designed not only to motivate students but also to reduce dropout rates and encourage more students to pursue higher education," stated Pegu.
This incentive is open to both genders, ensuring equal opportunities for all students.
"It is important to promote education and provide equal opportunities to both the genders for the development of the state," the state education minister maintained.
Previously, the state government had introduced similar schemes to encourage girls' education and skill development, and this new initiative extends encouragement to all academically successful students.
Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, distributed scooters to high-achieving students under the Pragyan Bharati scheme at an event in Khanapara, Guwahati, last December. The scheme, instituted in memory of Banikanta Kakati, a renowned litterateur and linguist, entered its sixth year in 2023, benefiting 35,770 students.
This announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by the Assam government to enhance education quality and increase enrollment rates across the state.
