Two young men were rescued by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) late Monday after their vehicle overturned in the swollen Bin River on the Rishikesh-Haridwar-Chilla Barrage Road.
The SDRF team from Dhalwala was sent to the spot soon after receiving the alert at around 9.15 pm. Heavy rain, poor visibility and strong currents made the rescue difficult. The vehicle had been carried downstream and got stuck against a stepped dam.
When the rescuers reached the spot, they found one of the men sitting on top of the vehicle. Using ropes and rescue equipment, the team reached him and brought him out of the river before taking him to hospital.
SDRF in-charge Kavindra Sajwan said the team initially found one person on the vehicle. After rescuing him, they came to know that another man was still trapped inside.
The rescue team then returned to the vehicle and made several attempts to reach the trapped man. Despite the strong current and darkness, the personnel eventually managed to pull him out and take him to hospital.
Sajwan said the trapped man could be seen inside the vehicle and was calling out for help. The rescuers worked together and carefully reached him despite the challenging conditions.
Both men were taken to hospital after being rescued. Their condition was not immediately known.
