Security forces have launched a search operation after sighting more than half a dozen drones from Pakistan hovering near several key forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district on Monday morning, officials said.
The key forward areas where Pakistani drones were spotted include Balakote, Langote, and Gursai Nallah in the Mendhar sector around 9:15 pm on Sunday, they said.
According to security forces, these drones are believed to have been launched for surveillance and were spotted flying very high. After staying in the areas for a few minutes, the drones reportedly returned to the Pakistani side.
They quickly cordoned off the area and launched a massive search operation at first light of the day in several areas where the movement of drones was detected. The search operation is aimed at preventing drugs, weapons, and ration supplies from being delivered to terrorists, officials said.
The tight security control has not only prevented infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir but has also made life difficult for terrorists operating in several mountainous districts of the region.
However, the use of drones by Pakistan to drop weapons and narcotics has emerged as a major challenge for security agencies over the past couple of years. In February last year, the police announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh for anyone providing information about the sighting of a drone that leads to the recovery of dropped material.
