A joint cordon and search operation has been intensified in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday following a brief exchange of fire between terrorists and security forces on Saturday night, officials said.
According to officials, so far no terrorist body has been retrieved from the gunfight site, with forces carrying out an intensive search operation. Officials said that a joint team of the police, Army, and CRPF launched the operation in the Chanapora areas following specific intelligence about the presence of some militants hiding in the area.
The area was cordoned off last night, while a combing operation was initiated to trace the suspects.
During the operation, security forces have been conducting systematic searches, with reinforcements maintaining a tight security grid to prevent the militants from escaping.
While an initial gunfight between the forces and terrorists confirmed the presence, there has been no exchange of fire since then, but the operation, according to officials, remains in progress.
Reinforcements have been rushed in with a multi-layered cordon already in place to track the hiding terrorists in the area. This is the first encounter to occur in recent months, since the situation in the Kashmir Valley has improved over the past few years.
Besides, experts and former security analysts believe this reflects that either the militancy has gone down or it has gone subterranean.
This is a developing story; more updates shall follow as they emerge.
