Security forces have launched a massive cordon and search operation in several villages of Rajouri district after noticing suspicious movement in the region.
The operation was initiated late on Thursday night and is still going on to trace the suspected individuals, official sources said.
The sources further said that the security forces received credible inputs about suspicious movement in villages located in the Thanamandi and Manjakote subdivisions of the district in the Jammu division.
“Acting on the credible leads, joint teams of the 49 Rashtriya Rifles, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Special Operations Group cordoned off the area during the midnight hours to track the suspected individuals,” the sources added.
The operation resumed with first light of the day, with comprehensive ongoing searches in the forested villages of the region, they said. In a related development, a Special Operations Group (SOG) jawan of the Jammu and Kashmir Police lost his life during a separate encounter in Udhampur district, while two of his fellow jawans suffered bullet injuries.
The encounter lasted nearly two days, during which security forces killed one terrorist, while at least two of his associates are believed to have escaped from the site.
On Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also chaired the first-ever UT-level security conference to assess the security situation and troop preparedness in the wake of the upcoming winter months in the UT.
At the conference, Sinha pledged to strengthen security to eliminate every terrorist operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
