In a major development, the Punjab Anti-Gangster Task Force has arrested the two main suspects linked to the broad daylight murder of Chandigarh-based property dealer Chamanpreet Singh, alias Chini Kubaheri. The arrests were made after an intensive operation and a gunfight in Kaithal, less than 24 hours after the gruesome murder.
The AGTF traced the accused to a hideout in Kaithal. When surrounded, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the police team in an attempt to escape. In the retaliatory firing, the accused were injured and later overpowered.
Police recovered the motorcycle used in the crime, which had a fake number plate. The weapon used in the murder was also seized. The arrested accused have been identified as Rajan, alias Piyush Pehalwan, a resident of Ferozepur.
Investigating officers revealed that Rajan had recently returned from Malaysia and had entered India illegally through the Nepal border to carry out the attack. Pritam Shah, a resident of Nawanshahr, is a history-sheeter with several criminal cases against him, including attempt to murder and violations under the Arms Act across different districts.
The victim, Chamanpreet Singh, was a known property dealer from Kubaheri village in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. The 31-year-old dealer was shot dead around noon on Wednesday when he was leaving a gym in Chandigarh’s Sector 9 area.
CCTV grab showed a shocking scene. As Chamanpreet sat inside his black Toyota Fortuner, a helmet-wearing attacker in a red T-shirt fired more than a dozen shots at close range.
Despite trying to escape by driving away, he collapsed inside the vehicle. The incident, which took place in a high-security VVIP area, created panic across the city. The motive behind the murder is still being investigated. Early reports suggest that Chamanpreet had received an extortion call demanding Rs 50 lakh from members linked to the Bambiha gang.
Soon after the murder, gangster Lucky Patial allegedly claimed responsibility on social media. He called the victim an informer for rival groups. The AGTF and Chandigarh Police are now looking into whether the murder was linked to the extortion demand, a property dispute, or ongoing gang rivalry.
