Four days after the mysterious death of Anamik Mondal, a third-year English Honours student of Jadavpur University, authorities are tightening security measures on campus amid mounting concerns.

At an administrative meeting held on Monday, the university decided to fence off water bodies inside the campus and frame new regulations for student events. Vice Chancellor Amitabh Dutta said a committee would be formed to draft the guidelines. “The university authorities will ensure that the rules are strictly followed,” Dutta said.

The meeting also recommended increasing the number of security guards and expanding CCTV surveillance across the campus. However, officials admitted that there were no cameras installed at the site where Mondal’s body was found, slowing down the investigation.

Meanwhile, the probe into the case has been handed over to the homicide wing of Kolkata police, joint commissioner of police (crime) Rupesh Kumar confirmed. Police have already questioned three out of seven students under the scanner, with more interrogations expected in the coming days.

The student’s family, alleging murder, met Police Commissioner Manoj Verma on Monday before visiting Jadavpur Police Station. A murder case has been formally registered.

The university has also reiterated its ban on the entry of drugs into the campus, a directive that had been issued two years ago but reportedly not enforced effectively.

“After following the rules for a few days, laxity sets in due to shortage of guards. We are forming a team to identify vulnerable spots on the campus, especially in the evenings,” Dutta admitted.

The tragic death has reignited questions about lapses in campus safety, with critics asking why events continued beyond scheduled hours and why key areas lacked adequate surveillance.

With the investigation still ongoing, police officials say the autopsy and forensic reports will be crucial in determining the exact circumstances of the student’s death.
