In the wake of the blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening, Kolkata Police has ramped up security across the city, particularly around the Eden Gardens, where the first India–South Africa Test match is scheduled to begin on Friday. With the threat of sabotage looming over the capital, authorities in Kolkata are leaving nothing to chance to ensure the safety of players and spectators.
Both teams are scheduled to begin practice sessions at Eden Gardens from Wednesday. In preparation, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma held a high-level meeting with officials of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on Tuesday to review security arrangements in and around the stadium.
According to police sources, plans are underway to implement a three-tier security system at Eden Gardens. Special surveillance will cover every layer — from the outer perimeter of the stadium to the gates, stands, and seating areas.
“Spectators entering the venue will be subjected to multiple security screenings, with each individual expected to pass through at least two metal detector checks. The entry of bags or suspicious objects into the stadium has been completely banned,” said a police officer.
Plainclothes police officers will be deployed both inside and outside the stadium to monitor movement and prevent any untoward incident. The Special Task Force (STF) of Lalbazar will also assist in maintaining tight vigil throughout the duration of the Test match.
A senior Kolkata Police official said, “We are keeping extra vigil. Considering the blast in Delhi, special and additional security measures are being implemented. Alongside the city police, STF units will also be deployed at key points.”
Sources in Lalbazar police headquarters confirmed that security has been strengthened around the hotels where both the Indian and South African teams will be staying. Although officials declined to disclose the number of personnel deployed, they confirmed that both the hotel premises and surrounding areas will be under 24-hour surveillance.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that India coach Gautam Gambhir, who was expected to visit the Kalighat temple, may have postponed his visit due to the heightened security situation, though this has not been officially confirmed.
At a time when panic is spreading across parts of the country, Kolkata Police has assured that the city’s security infrastructure is being reinforced to allow fans to enjoy the upcoming India–South Africa Test without fear.
“The objective of this strict security is to ensure that cricket lovers can enjoy the match peacefully and without any worry,” said an official source.
