Security forces busted two old terrorist hideouts during a joint search operation in the forests of Damhal Hanjipora in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials said on Monday.
According to officials, the joint operation was launched by the Army’s 9 Rashtriya Rifles and the J&K Police following specific intelligence inputs.
“Two old hideouts were traced and subsequently busted in the Ahmadabad and Nengripora forest areas,” an official said.
He said the recovery of food supplies and cooking cylinders suggests that these hideouts were used by terrorists some time ago. Further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, security forces cordoned off the area and conducted a comprehensive search operation to recover any additional suspicious material. Officials said efforts are being made to find out whether these hideouts were linked to any terrorist activity in the region.
A senior police officer said such operations by security forces would continue in forested and remote areas to prevent terrorists from exploiting the vulnerabilities of the area.
It is worth noting that Kulgam and its adjoining forest areas have been used as hideouts by terrorists in the past. However, in recent years, due to effective counter-insurgency operations by the forces have, there has been significant reduction in such activities.
Earlier in August, two Army soldiers were killed in a gunfight with terrorists in the same Kulgam forests, which lasted nearly 12 days.
