Security forces on Wednesday evening recovered a massive 14.5 kg Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from the Shopian district, officials said. Chinar Warriors, along with the personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir police, in a joint operation, recovered and defused an IED near Chitragam in the general area of Zainapora, Shopian, averting a major disaster.
Approximately 14.5 kg-sized IED packed with explosives and fitted with a remote trigger was professionally handled and destroyed by the security forces in an organised operation.
According to 2026 statistics, while incidents of terror have gone down drastically in the Kashmir Valley, the modified forms of terror methods, including the use of IEDs, remain a substantial threat to the security forces and the general population overall.
On January 2, security forces recovered an IED dropped by a drone from Pakistan in the Gulpur sector of Poonch district. Five days later, a 3-4 kg IED was recovered during a joint cordon and search operation (CASO) in the forest area of Rajouri district.
On January 16, a 3.5 kg IED found in a concealed bag was defused in the Kakora village of Rajouri. Later, on January 20, security forces detected and destroyed an IED on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway at Takiya Tapper.
IEDs were also recovered at Narbal highway on February 18, with subsequent recoveries made in the Janbazpora area of Baramulla. One other was recovered in Ganderbal district on February 21, while two more IEDs were recovered and destroyed on February 25.
Last month, security forces recovered a ready-to-use IED from a hideout busted in the Rajouri district.
