In the wake of a recent attack near the popular tourist resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, security forces have been placed on high alert, leading to tightened security measures and expanded cordon-and-search operations to locate the militants involved.
On Thursday, militants ambushed security forces near Botapathri in Gulmarg, resulting in the deaths of three army personnel and two army porters, with two additional individuals injured.
As the search for the militants continues in the forested areas surrounding Gulmarg, an official familiar with the situation informed reporters that security agencies have received high-level intelligence regarding recent undetected infiltrations.
The official stated, “There are disturbing intelligence inputs from Pattan, Tangmarg, and other areas, prompting security forces to remain on high alert. While these inputs are concerning, they could also be a distraction.”
Although the assailants have not yet been traced, security forces have intensified thorough checks at various locations, and patrolling by security personnel has been increased. The army has augmented its presence at several vulnerable spots, including the Narbal to Gulmarg road and other connecting routes such as Baba Reshi and Butapathri.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Muhammad Zaid Malik, told reporters on Saturday that evidence collected from the attack site indicates that two to three militants were involved.
Officials noted that earlier this year, suspected militants were observed near the Gulmarg Gondola’s phase two, which leads up to the Apharwat Hills, known for skiing activities.
The attack and the presence of militants near popular tourist destinations have raised alarms within security and intelligence agencies, especially following recent attacks in areas such as Sonamarg and Gulmarg.
