In a setback to the ruling Congress in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP registered a clear victory in three out of four Municipal Corporation elections in Himachal Pradesh, the results of which were declared on Sunday. The Congress was however able to secure victory in Palampur Municipal Corporation elections. The polling for four MCs was held on May 17. Against all hope in the constituency of Congress rebel and BJP MLA sudhir Sharma, the Congress party badly lost the MC elections in Dharamshala, winning in only five out of 17 wards, while BJP won in 11 wards and an independent walked away with one.
In Solan, the BJP won in 10 wards, Congress in six and an independent in one, while in Mandi, dominated by political heavyweight, leader of opposition and former BJP CM, Congress could win in only one ward against BJP's victory in 14. One ward went to an independent.
In Palampur, which is represented by Congress MLA, Ashish Butail, Congress dominated the scene by registering a win in 11, limiting BJP to the figure of 4.
The Congress party, which claimed in good performance in the urban local body polls, whose results were declared on May 18, after having chosen not to release official list of candidates for these polls, is clearly unable to explain this defeat in Municipal Corporation elections, which are being considered significant ahead of Assembly polls scheduled for 2027.
The BJP, on the other hand, has a reason to rejoice. "This clearly indicates that the Congress is on its way out from Himachal now..The people are fed up with the policies of the Congress government which have made the life of ordinary people hell. They have not fulfilled their guarantees also and the people have given them a befitting reply with defeat in MC polls held on party symbols, " said state BJP chief, Dr Rajiv Bindal. He said people will completely wipe out Congress party in vidhan sabha polls in 2027.
