A stampede at Baba Siddhanath Temple in Jehanabad’s Makhdumpur area claimed the lives of at least seven devotees in the early hours of Monday. The tragic incident also left nine others injured.
The injured were rushed to the hospitals in Makhdumpur and Jehanabad for treatment.
Jehanabad District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey confirmed the fatalities, stating, "Seven people have lost their lives and nine have sustained injuries in the stampede at Baba Siddhanath Temple. The situation is now under control, and we are closely monitoring developments."
The stampede reportedly occurred during a religious gathering at the temple, leading to panic among the devotees.
Divakar Kumar Vishwakarma, SHO Jehanabad, mentioned that both the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police had visited the site to assess the situation.
"We are meeting the families of the victims and working to identify those who have died," he added.
Vikas Kumar, SDO Jehanabad, expressed sorrow over the incident, noting that despite all efforts, the tragedy occurred. "It is a sad day. We will continue to review the situation and provide further information," he said.
Earlier on July 2, a stampede in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras left over 120 dead. The stampede took place at a religious congregation led by Baba Narayan Hari.
