As many as 20 people were injured after the bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and overturned in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, officials said.
Officials said a bus bearing registration number JK02AG-7822 suddenly skidded off the road and turned turtle near Highway school, Sunetar.
The accident occurred near the highway school, Sunetar, in Ramnagar tehsil. The locals present at the scene immediately informed the police officials and initiated the rescue operations.
“A passenger bus skidded off the road near Highway School, Sunetar, and overturned close to the roadside in Ramnagar tehsil of Udhampur district, injuring at least 20 people,” officials said.
All the injured persons have sustained minor injuries and are said to be in stable condition.
Earlier, on July 5, at least 36 Amarnath pilgrims were injured in a road crash when five buses of the Amarnath Yatra cavalcade slammed into each other after one bus reported brake failure in the Ramban district.
Immediately after the accident, the police and local volunteers launched a rescue operation and rushed all the injured to the nearby District Hospital.
Dr Mohammad Rafi, Incharge Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Ramban, informed reporters that, “We received a total of 36 injured patients. All of them have minor injuries, and we have had their tests conducted.”
The Jammu-Srinagar highway is one of the most dangerous national highways in the country. Every year, hundreds of road accidents occur on these mountainous stretches, resulting in the loss of precious lives.
According to official stats released in April 2025, J&K has witnessed a total of 28,896 road accidents, resulting in 4,251 fatalities and 37,725 injuries, in the past five years.
