Seven people, including three children, lost their lives in separate roof collapse incidents caused by heavy rain across Haryana, officials said on Wednesday. The accidents were reported from Bhiwani, Fatehabad, Kurukshetra, and Yamunanagar.
In Bhiwani’s Kalinga village, three young girls died early Wednesday morning when their house collapsed in the rain. Their parents and younger brother were rescued but suffered serious injuries. The victims were identified as Anshika (15), Disha (9), and Bharti (7). Their father Ompal, a labourer, had been living with his family in a rented house for four years as his own house was unsafe. He was listed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, but construction of his new home had not yet started.
Local officials said the continuous rain had left the entire village waterlogged, putting pressure on weak structures. Ompal’s uncle added that water had collected behind the house wall, leading to the collapse. Villagers rushed to help and took the family to Rohtak Medical College.
In Shahabad, Kurukshetra, two brothers died when the roof of their house caved in around 6 am. Four others were injured but rescued by locals. The victims, Sandeep (26) and Kuldeep (27), were migrant workers from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Police said others injured in the incident, also migrant workers, were being treated at hospitals in Shahabad and Kurukshetra.

In Yamunanagar’s Bandi village, a mud roof collapsed on Wednesday morning, killing Maan Singh (45), a daily wage labourer. His wife and three children were injured. Officials said continuous rainfall had weakened the old structure. Singh was fatally struck by a falling girder before the roof came crashing down. Villagers helped rescue the family and rushed them to hospital. Water had allegedly accumulated around the structure, causing the base to sink, which led to the sudden collapse of the roof.
In Fatehabad’s Samain village, Randhir Saini (49), died when the roof of his house gave way as he was sleeping. He was rushed to hospital but declared dead on arrival.
Highest rainfall in 27 years recorded
Heavy rains continue to batter Haryana, damaging crops and disrupting lives. The state has now recorded its highest cumulative monsoon rainfall in 27 years. Between June 1 and September 2, Haryana received 498.4 mm of rainfall against the normal of 357.3 mm — nearly 39 per cent above average.
The last time Haryana saw such heavy rainfall was in 1998, when it received 698 mm during the monsoon season, also 39.6 per cent above normal. IMD
Director Surender Paul said this year’s figure could surpass 1998 as the monsoon period was not yet over.
Explaining the surge, Paul said “It is raining excessively in Haryana these days. There are two main reasons. One is a western disturbance and the other is the monsoon. In addition to this, a low-pressure area has been developed over Rajasthan, which is contributing to rainfall in the southern part of Haryana.”
450 houses flooded in Fatehabad
Persistent rain over the past week has paralysed life in Fatehabad district. Over 450 houses in Bhuna town were flooded, over 900 acres of crops submerged, and schools ordered shut in three blocks. One man also went missing in the swollen Ghaggar river.
Bhuna town and nearby villages suffered the worst, with areas like Chandan Nagar, Model Town, Dhani Sanchla Road, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Market submerged under knee-deep water. Dozens of families have shifted to community halls after their homes filled with water.
The downpour also flooded farmlands in Rahan Kheri, Laharia, Dhani Bhojraj, and Nadhori villages, raising fears of huge crop losses for farmers.
