At least seven workers were killed after a massive rock collapsed at a stone quarry in Bengaluru South district on Thursday morning, triggering a major rescue operation.
The incident occurred in the early hours at Madapattana, where daily-wage labourers were engaged in quarrying activities at a stone crusher site. According to initial reports, a large boulder suddenly gave way and fell on the workers, trapping them underneath. All seven victims died on the spot.
The deceased are believed to be migrant workers from Bihar and Assam, though their identities are yet to be officially confirmed.
Rescue operations are currently underway as authorities fear that more workers may still be trapped beneath the debris. Emergency response teams, along with police personnel, rushed to the site soon after the incident and began efforts to clear the rubble.
Several injured workers were rescued and shifted to a nearby private hospital for treatment. Officials are in the process of verifying the exact number of those injured, with preliminary reports suggesting multiple casualties.
The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, and further investigations are expected to follow. The incident has once again raised concerns over safety conditions at quarrying sites, particularly those employing daily-wage labourers.
