A tragic accident in Chapra, Nadia, south Bengal, claimed seven lives, including a child, after a head-on collision between a four-wheeler and an e-rickshaw, known as a Toto in Bengal, on Friday. Several others were seriously injured, and officials fear the death toll may rise.
The accident happened near the Charatala petrol pump on the Krishnanagar-Karimpur state highway, where a busy market was set up for Holi shopping.
The area was crowded due to Holi celebrations and the ongoing month of Ramzan. The crash was so severe that a child and two others died instantly at the scene.
Locals and police from Chapra police station rushed to the spot as soon as they heard the news. Rescue operations began immediately, with people working together to free those trapped under the wreckage.

The injured were taken to Chapra Rural Hospital, where doctors declared three people, including the child, dead on arrival. As the condition of others worsened, they were moved to Shaktinagar District Hospital for better treatment, but four more victims died from their injuries.
An eyewitness, Radhamohan Das, described the horrifying moment. He said several families from Teghari, under Nakashipara police station, had come to Chapra for Eid shopping in a Toto.
Suddenly, a speeding four-wheeler from the opposite direction crashed into them. The impact was so strong that the child was thrown under the vehicle and crushed.
