Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched a massive security exercise in Kulgam district ahead of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, covering higher reaches, dense forest belts, nurseries, orchards and other vulnerable areas to ensure a peaceful and secure pilgrimage.

Official sources said the large-scale operation was carried out in close coordination with other security forces following specific security assessments.

The searches were carried out at various sensitive locations, particularly in remote and inaccessible areas of the district, where security personnel conducted thorough combing and area domination exercises.

According to sources, police teams, assisted by other security agencies, searched forest routes, high-altitude terrain, orchards and nursery zones to eliminate any potential security threats.

The police rounded up several Over Ground Workers (OGWs) suspected of providing logistical support to militant networks in the region.

Police officials said the exercise was part of broader efforts to maintain a robust security grid, and that similar search operations would continue across the district in the coming days.

The Amarnath Yatra 2026 is scheduled to begin on July 3 and will continue for 57 days. Authorities are expecting a massive rush this year following last year’s terror attack in Pahalgam.
