Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated the first phase of the refurbished Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Golaghat district. He also laid the foundation stone for the academy’s next phase.
Accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Shah was briefed on the academy’s modern facilities by Director General of Police Harmeet Singh.
Following the inauguration, he toured the premises, where senior officials also took photographs with the Home Minister.
Shah arrived in Dergaon on Friday evening for a three-day visit to Assam and Mizoram.
The police academy, spanning 340 acres, is undergoing modernisation at an estimated cost of ₹1,024 crore in two phases, officials stated.

Additionally, the phase includes a dedicated museum and a modern parade ground.
"This modern infrastructure is designed to give the trainees both theoretical and practical aspects of police training seamlessly," an official said.
The weapons training simulator, a key feature of the facility, aims to enhance law enforcement personnel’s combat preparedness in a risk-free environment.
"The stimulator can be adapted to various firearms, enabling recruits to receive basic training, refine their firing techniques, and assess their skill levels," the official added.
The academy will also offer special courses and commando training. The smart classrooms, fitted with interactive digital boards and personal computers, will facilitate enhanced learning. The building will also house a library, computer laboratories, and seminar rooms.
In the second phase of the project, residential infrastructure will be developed at a projected cost of ₹425.48 crore.
This phase will provide housing for 240 families, hostels for 312 officers and personnel, and accommodation for 2,640 trainees.
