Marking the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata on Monday for a brief but significant visit. According to the official itinerary, Shah's special flight will land at around 3.50 pm. He will first visit Mookerjee's ancestral residence in Bhowanipore, where he will pay floral tributes.
Following this, the Home Minister will proceed to Eco Park in New Town at around 4.50 pm, where he will lay the foundation stone for a proposed 125-foot statue of Mookerjee. The event will be attended by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya.
Spread across 480 acres, Eco Park is one of Kolkata's premier recreational destinations, known for its expansive lake, themed gardens, replicas of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Solar Dome and sculptures of eminent personalities. The addition of a massive statue of Mookerjee is expected to further enhance the park's appeal.
Extensive preparations are underway ahead of the event. The park has been decorated, and officials have stepped up arrangements. State Public Works Minister Ajay Poddar, along with senior officials of the department, HIDCO representatives and engineers, inspected the site on Saturday.
After the foundation stone-laying ceremony, Shah will attend a birth anniversary programme at the Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan. He is expected to depart for Delhi at around 7.30 pm, concluding his three-and-a-half-hour visit.
Meanwhile, the BJP has lined up several programmes at its state headquarters on Muralidhar Sen Lane to mark the occasion.
Speaking ahead of the event, Samik Bhattacharya described the day as "historic", saying it holds special significance for BJP workers across the country. He added that the celebration gains greater importance as a BJP-led government now governs the country associated with Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
