One person has been arrested after a woman was gunned down during a religious ceremony at a village in Shimla district, police confirmed on Monday. The deceased was identified as Ritika (26), a resident of Andhra Village in Rohru, Shimla, they said.
The incident took place on Sunday during the consecration ceremony of a newly constructed temple of a local deity in Kulgaon village.
While everyone was dancing and enjoying the festivities, the accused, according to police, fired a bullet as part of the celebration.
Reports suggest that hundreds of people had gathered for the traditional deity ceremony, dancing and singing to the tunes of local instruments.
The woman suffered a fatal gunshot wound at the event, leading to her death on the spot.
The deceased has been identified as Ritika (alias Gudiya), wife of Satish, a resident of Bakora village, Post Office Andhra, Tehsil Chirgaon, in Shimla district.
Locals and family members of the victim expressed shock over the incident. The accused, identified as Ritik, is a resident of the Rohru market.
The weapon used in the incident reportedly belonged to one of his relatives.
Officials said that the case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
