Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday urged his supporters not to gather outside his official residence, 'Varsha', in south Mumbai to demand his continuation as CM.
"Following the great victory of the Mahayuti alliance, our government will be formed once again in the state. We contested the election together as a grand alliance and we remain united today," Shinde said on X, requesting his supporters not to assemble at Varsha or any other location in his support.
"Out of love for me, some have appealed for people to come together and travel to Mumbai. I am deeply grateful for your affection, but I ask that no one gather in such a manner to show their support," he added.
Despite the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance securing a decisive victory, winning 230 seats in the 288-member assembly, the ruling coalition has yet to reach a consensus on who should be the next CM.
Shinde’s supporters have argued that he should continue as CM, given the landslide win under his leadership. However, BJP leaders, who recorded their highest-ever tally in the state assembly elections, have been advocating for Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis to take the oath as CM for a third term.
In the recent assembly elections, the BJP secured 132 seats, while allies Shiv Sena and NCP won 57 and 41 seats respectively. The vote count for the November 20 polls took place on Saturday.
