Shivakumar sets deadline for firms to fix B'luru potholes

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the move to remove potholes is aimed at ensuring a clean and smooth traffic flow across the city.

A final deadline has been issued to contractors in Bengaluru to fill the city's potholes by November. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the move is aimed at ensuring a clean and smooth traffic flow across the city, promising that the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) would provide relief from the road woes as soon as possible.

The action follows an incident where a Bengaluru-based logistics company, BlackBuck, announced it would be moving out of its office in the Bellandur area, notorious for its poor road conditions and severe traffic congestion. Co-founder and CEO Rajesh Yabaji criticised the city's infrastructure in a social media post, stating he saw "no improvement for at least five years." While the announcement sparked widespread criticism of Bengaluru’s infrastructure online, the company’s corporate team quickly issued a clarification, stating they were only moving from the Bellandur location and had no plans of leaving the city altogether.

In a related move, Bengaluru Central City Corporation Commissioner, Rajendra Cholan, inspected several areas under the CV Raman Nagar division on Wednesday. He identified a range of issues, including damaged footpaths, pothole-ridden roads, and uncollected rubbish. Taking serious note of the problems, he issued a warning that any official or engineer who fails to act responsibly would be suspended.

According to an official statement, the Commissioner also ordered notices to be issued to landowners of a vacant plot on Jeevan Bima Nagar main road that was filled with waste. Furthermore, he directed officials to immediately remove unauthorised sheds built by encroaching on footpaths and roads, with penalties to be levied against the encroachers.

Cholan instructed officials to identify and remove all encroachments from pedestrian pathways and to eradicate all "black spots" within the Central City Corporation limits. A ward-wise list of these spots is to be prepared, and cleanliness drives will be undertaken to transform them into attractive public spaces, with strict measures to prevent further dumping.

The Commissioner also directed officials to prepare a detailed report on all roads that have been dug up by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), as well as those requiring manhole repairs. A joint discussion will then be held with BWSSB officials to ensure corrective actions are taken.
