Shots were allegedly fired, crude bombs thrown, and a car vandalised outside Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arjun Singh's residence in Bhatpara, West Bengal, in the early hours of Tuesday, according to Singh. The former Member of Parliament claimed the incident, which he said occurred around midnight, left the North 24 Parganas district area enveloped in smoke.
"I was watching television and suddenly heard a commotion outside around 12.30 am. Bombs were hurled and shots were fired. I have videos too. As soon as I rushed out, everyone made a getaway," said Singh.
He further alleged that the police were 'fleeing' during the assault. "The condition of these poor police officers is dreadful. If there was a retaliatory attack, someone could have been killed," he added, sharing purported CCTV footage of the events.
However, Somenath Shyam Ichini, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA for Jagaddal, refuted the allegations, suggesting that Singh was responsible for violence in the locality.
Meanwhile, the police have stated that no shots were fired or crude bombs thrown and confirmed that a police investigation into the matter is ongoing.
