Haryana’s Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Choudhry.

Haryana’s Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Choudhry on Friday chaired a review meeting with officials of the Irrigation Department to assess the state’s preparedness for flood control ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

The meeting, held in Delhi, focused on evaluating the progress of ongoing irrigation projects, identifying challenges, and discussing appropriate solutions to ensure timely completion. Choudhry directed officials from all districts to finalise flood control preparations by June 30, stressing the urgency of proactive measures.

During the meeting, the minister reviewed the status of current projects and called for heightened monitoring in flood-prone areas in light of the monsoon forecast.

She made it clear that any delays or shortcomings in the execution of projects would not be tolerated and that accountability would be fixed on the concerned officials.

Emphasising infrastructure development, she highlighted the importance of micro-irrigation schemes, remodeling of drains, constructing permanent pump houses, and laying pipelines in low-lying regions to facilitate better water flow and reduce flooding risks.

Choudhry also instructed that canal embankments, especially those near villages, must be reinforced, and recommended the installation of stone studs to prevent soil erosion. She stressed that work on new pond construction should be carried out on a war footing and urged the public to adopt water conservation practices, using water wisely to avoid wastage.

Senior officials of the Irrigation Department attended the meeting in person, while district-level officials joined via video conferencing to ensure state-wide coordination.
